The Blog Post was Published On Wednesday

Mojang Studios has put its foot down when it comes to blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), according to a blog post posted on Wednesday. Mojang is well known for creating the most popular game ever Minecraft which is a three-dimensional (3D) Sandbox game that has no goals.

To date, Mojang has sold 238 million copies of Minecraft and no other video game has sold more copies. Minecraft's sales are followed by the top selling games like Grand Theft Auto V (165M copies), Tetris (100M copies), and Wii Sports (82.9M copies).

The blog post released on Wednesday, states that Minecraft will not be using blockchain technology or NFTs. The Minecraft creators are convinced that "all players should have access to the same functions" and "everyone has access to the same content."

Using NFTs would go against the company's ethos, as NFTs can "create models of exclusion and scarcity that go against [the company's] guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft." The company gives a variety of reasons like the fact there are too many blockchains offering NFTs, "some third-party NFTs may not be reliable," and NFTs have been "sold at artificially or [for] fraudulently inflated prices."

"As such, to ensure that Minecraft players have an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications, nor are they used to create NFTs that are associated with any in-game content, including worlds persona items, skins or other mods." Mojang's blog post provides details. The video game developer from Stockholm added:

We will also be watching closely how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that the principles above are not violated, and to determine if it allows for more secure gaming experiences or other practical and inclusive applications. However, we have no plans to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft at the moment.

Mojang Will Not Follow Heavy Weight Game Software Companies Like Square Enix, Konami, Ubisoft - Minecraft Creator Believes "Speculative Pricing and Investment Mindset takes the fun away from playing the game

Mojang's decision comes at a time where companies such as Ubisoft, Square Enix, and Konami have all announced NFT implementations of one kind or other. By the end of 2021, Ubisoft and GSC Game World faced backlash over NFT inclusion.

The flak the companies got was so bad, GSC Game World decided to stop production of the NFT elements planned for the game Stalker 2. However, an executive at Ubisoft, Nicolas Pouard, said to the press that he thinks gamers don't like NFTs because they don't understand the benefits of this technology.

Konami detailed in February that it would continue to issue NFTs to preserve the company's content. Square Enix also participated in a $35million investment round for Zebedee which is a fintech and bitcoin payment processor. Zebedee is a Hoboken New Jersey-based firm Zebedee specializes in the integration of bitcoin payments into games.

Mojang does not want to have anything to do with blockchains or NFTs, as it is an all-inclusive game. "The speculative pricing and investment mindset around NFTs takes the focus away from the game itself and encourages profiteering that we believe is inconsistent with the long-term enjoyment and the success of our players," Mojang concluded on Wednesday.
